The Girl with the Louding Voice by Abi Dare is what I am reading at the moment. It is set in 2015 Nigeria, where a girl is sold to an older man for her bride price because her family needs the money. She runs away and is taken in by a lady named Big Mama, who clothes and feeds her but does not pay her. At the moment, she is learning to read before she runs away. She is trying to get a scholarship to a school. It has echoes of Frederick Douglass.
