Facebook

It is naptime at the Kalinowski house, a time when I would typically be on Facebook. Alas, I am currently abstaining from it.

I've been reading others' posts about their decision to give up Facebook. They claim to have reclaimed 13 hours of their lives each week and rave about how wonderful it is. My question is: are they truly using those 13 hours for something more meaningful? Are they watching television? Reading books? Engaging in affairs with their friends' spouses?

How do we assess the value of our activities? I contend that any activity that fosters a positive connection with others (and doesn't involve deceit) is more worthwhile than others. Facebook does have significant value; time spent on it means interacting with friends and family. Even time spent with strangers or acquaintances is better than many alternatives you can think of (there's no arguing that!).

Thus, everything has its place, including Facebook.
