Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton – A Review

Carrie sent me this amazing book in the mail, and we both read it. Now Joel has it—I hope he loves it as much as I do. He’s a sucker for animals, animal narrators, post-apocalyptic fiction, and science fiction. What’s not to like?  It is set where Carrie lives in Washington. It made it even better than I had been there and could picture the natural world described.

Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton – A Review

This book is GOOD. The story is told by a domesticated crow named S.T.—short for Shit Turd. Yes, you read that right. Shit Turd. Honestly, who doesn’t love a main character with a name like that?

S.T. reveres humans, especially his owner Jim, but as the story unfolds, it becomes painfully (and hilariously) clear that Jim is, in fact, the real shit turd—and most of humanity isn’t far behind. As S.T. ventures into the ruins of civilization, he’s joined by his loyal best friend Dennis, a sweet and devoted dog. I love Dennis. But be warned: heroes die. Dogs die. There’s heartbreak. There’s hardship. It’s not always easy to watch.

As S.T. journeys through this post-human world, he meets other animals who are learning to adapt. Their perspectives are funny, wise, and surprisingly moving. Through them, the book explores survival, friendship, grief, and the raw beauty of the natural world. There’s humor, heart, and a whole lot of bird sass.

The novel weaves together adventure, fantasy, and ecological insight—highlighting nature’s resilience and the invisible threads that connect all living things.

The themes hit home for me. This story of resilience and interconnectedness mirrors my own life right now—tending the garden, walking Peanut, creating small rituals that keep me grounded. I’m learning to embrace the wild parts of life, even as I try to build order through routine and creativity.
