The Summer Job by lizy Dent

I just wrapped up The Summer Job by Lizzie Dent, and wow, it’s such a hilarious read! I’ve always been drawn to stories about people who are trying to fake it until they make it. I’m definitely going to snap a pic of the cover and send it to Mallory; I know she’d love it too.

Birdy Finch—what a name, right?—is kind of just coasting through life with a series of dead-end jobs and not much purpose. When her best friend, Heather, bails on a sommelier summer position at a luxurious hotel in Scotland to chase romance in Italy, Birdy finds herself in the spotlight. Desperate and jobless, she jumps at the chance to take Heather’s place—pretending to be the wine expert.

When she arrives at Loch Dorn Estate, Birdy thinks it’ll be a simple gig, but she’s thrust into a high-stakes world of fine dining: Michelin-star dishes, a wine list boasting 124 bottles, and expectations that are sky-high. With zero sommelier training, she fumbles through her shifts—pouring wine all wrong, stumbling over wine jargon, and anxiously trying to keep her secret hidden as the summer unfolds.

Amid the chaos, Birdy starts to grow into her role. She develops connections with the hotel’s quirky staff—a mismatched family of kitchen and front-of-house characters—while her confidence blossoms. And then there’s a sweet, slow-burn romance with the brooding chef, James, that brings Birdy a spark of unexpected hope.

But every day is a tightrope walk; the risk of being discovered hangs over her—not just from Heather, who could find out, but from everyone who’s counting on her to deliver. Can Birdy balance her growing feelings, maintain her façade, and find the courage to embrace her true self?
